  1.                          The Second Ring

  3.      Welcome  to The Second Ring.   The purpose of RBBS-PC is to assist  in 
  4. the  free  exchange  of information.   It is dedicated   to  this  purpose.  
  5. Topics can include not only technical information or help with the IBM,  or 
  6. any  other,  personal computer,   but also poetry,  fiction,  or just plain 
  7. feelings.   The  users of this bulletin board have already gone through  an 
  8. auto-selection  process.   They  are  capable  of  utilizing  computers  or 
  9. computer terminals.  Presumably they are capable of reading. The quality of 
  10. their writing remains to be seen.  Finally, by finding the telephone number 
  11. they are interested in exploring new sources of information.

  13.      Why  the  name "The Second Ring?"  The obvious pun is not  the  reason  
  14. for the name.  Rather this bulletin board's name comes from a very  ancient 
  15. Galeic legend.  The legend is as follows:

  17.      "In  the  ancient times before men were counted among the  animals  of 
  18. God, the trees were asked `What would be the bravest thing that a man might 
  19. do, if he existed?`  The ancient oak replied `He would make mighty ships of 
  20. the  strongest  trees  and sail upon your seas.`   The tall  pines  of  the 
  21. forest  said  'He would carve bows from the sinewest of trees to  hunt  the 
  22. wild beasts.'  Each tree in its turn replied to the question until all were 
  23. heard from.   Still  God had not heard anything that pleased him.   Finally 
  24. the lowest form of life in the forest spoke up.

  26.      It  was  the mushroom.   'Forgive me mighty one for speaking.  I  have 
  27. heard each of the trees speak -- and they say nothing because they speak of 
  28. what would glorify themselves.  Behold, I am the least of your creations in 
  29. the forest and I can only speak from my own dreams.   Should you create Man 
  30. he will know the first ring as I do.   This first ring will  be the ring of 
  31. his friends,  family,  and neighbors.  It, like you, has neither a begining 
  32. nor  an end.   While it may grow as mine does to encompass  much,  it  will 
  33. limit  him  as  well as support him.   His horizons  will  be  finite,  his 
  34. ambitions limited,  his hopes encircled.   The bravest thing that Man could 
  35. do  would  be  to reach beyond this first ring and create a  second  -- the 
  36. second ring.   Like a drop of dew falling upon the still surface of a lake, 
  37. the  second  ring  would  beget a third and a  third  a  fourth  even  unto 
  38. infinity.   For  it is with the second ring that man would  become like you 
  39. -- with neither a begining nor an end and touch the  infinite.'

  41.      Upon hearing this,  God was pleased.   'I shall indeed make him in  my 
  42. own image and likeness.   And I shall place you,  the lowliest of my forest 
  43. creations,  in all the places where Man shall walk so that he might see the 
  44. first  ring.   I shall place wonder in in his heart.   And with this wonder 
  45. Man shall come to know that he can reach beyond the first ring.'"
